This is a major problem in the F-150 where the display on the instrument cluster shows a different gear than the physical shifter position. This is caused by a loose or broken shift cable clip that does not properly secure the transmission linkage. The solution is to replace the cable clip with an upgraded one as per Ford Recall guideliness.
