Turbocharger problems in the F-150 are initially subtle but they amplify with time if not resolved. You may notice a metallic buzz, a rattling noise at low rev (at high rev these sounds get muffled by the engine), loss of power, poor acceleration and a generally lazy engine.
These problems are usually caused by excessive play in the turbocharger wastegate actuator arm linkage. The solution is to install an aftermarket mechanical tension spring to stop the vibration or depending on the extent of the problem, replace the entire turbocharger. The OEM Service and Repair manual is an excellent resource if you want to dig further into the turbo problems on this truck. Not only for technicians but I also recommend it for owners as it helps to understand all the systems of this truck and to proactivey manage problems before they happen.
