The main difference between AWD and four-wheel drive (4WD) is how power is sent to the wheels and how the driver controls the system. With AWD, power is automatically sent to all four wheels of a vehicle.
AWD is usually activated full-time or on demand, so it operates without any input from the driver. 4WD, on the other hand, is part-time and must be engaged by the driver using a lever or button.
While AWD is more focused on on-road performance, 4WD is designed to overcome difficult terrain, including mud, rocks, and steep hills.
